Methodology

Cable selection considers two independent checks: current-carrying capacity (thermal rating, derated for ambient temperature and grouping with other circuits) and voltage drop (if a cable length is provided). The cable is sized for whichever check governs — if voltage drop requires a larger conductor than the thermal rating alone, the larger size is selected and clearly flagged.

Current-carrying capacity figures used in this calculator are indicative approximations derived from general electrical engineering methodology, not a reproduction of AS/NZS 3008.1.1 tables. Standards Australia tables are copyrighted and licensed material. For compliance-critical cable selection, always verify against the current edition of AS/NZS 3008.1.1 or equivalent manufacturer cable data sheets.

Assumptions & Limitations

  • Indicative current ratings only — not a substitute for AS/NZS 3008.1.1 tabulated data
  • Does not account for short-circuit withstand rating — verify separately against protective device let-through energy
  • Does not verify protective device compatibility (overload/fault coordination)
  • Grouping derating uses a simplified curve — actual derating depends on cable arrangement and touching/spaced configuration
  • Does not account for cable insulation type (PVC vs XLPE) — XLPE generally permits higher ratings
